Father’s Day will soon be upon us, which set me to thinking “where did the idea of dedicating a day to our Fathers originate from?” After a bit of research I discovered it was first celebrated in 1909 in USA.
The founding of Father’s Day is attributed to a lady called Sonora Louise Smart. Sonora’s mother died in childbirth when she was 16, leaving Sonora’s father to raise six children on his own. Although, Sonora did help her father, when she reached adulthood she realised the difficulties her father had conquered. Consequently, she developed a tremendous amount of respect and love for him.
Sonora asked for a dedication to be made in honour of her father. She approached the Spokane Ministerial Alliance and suggested her father’s birthday 5th June for the celebration day. The request was to
o late for the 5th June and so the third Sunday in June was chosen as the day of honour in 1909. The idea of Father’s Day soon became popular and spread around the country. After sometime, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day. Then eventually in 1972, President Nixon established a permanent national holiday in honour of our Father’s to be held on the 3rd Sunday of June each year.
Many countries across the globe celebrate father’s day including Argentina, Canada, Chile, France plus many more. Maybe, it all began in the USA or perhaps each country has its own origins. What we all have in common is that we need to acknowledge our fathers and not forget the support and care they have given throughout our lives.
I have many happy memories of my childhood and doing exciting things with my Dad. My favourite memory is skipping down the street trying not to tread on the cracks. He always said there would be a bear round the corner if I did tread on a crack. We would get to the corner and there would a big growl. Dads are great even to this day there is nobody who can make me laugh as much as my Dad. I know his favourite gift is a big cuddle but I think we should all buy our Dad’s a great gift for Father’s Day and show our appreciation.
